Masks and Patches and Drops – Oh My! Novel Nonwoven Formats for Cosmetic Applications

The world of beauty and wellness provides a unique opportunity for product innovation, including in the nonwoven space. While the goals of the products may remain consistent, the routes to achieving the consumers’ goals can change quite often. Whether it is a new functional ingredient that was just discovered or an increased focus on sustainability, a variety of inputs can push product developers to design new products to meet the demands of consumers.

In this presentation, recent product formats that incorporate nonwovens will be reviewed and discussed. Some examples include fully dissolvable makeup remover wipes, masks that combine nonwovens and hydrogels, and patches that can be formulated to address varying skin conditions.

Lastly, we will discuss the newest nonwoven product type, electrospun nanofibers. While nanofibers have been utilized for many applications in the past, only recently have products based on nanofibers been launched by brands in the beauty space. Water-soluble polymers are used to form the nanofibers, while functional ingredients can be added either as part of the solution that is then electrospun or incorporated into the final product as a powder. We will explore the benefits and challenges of developing nanofiber products for use in skincare and beyond.
