Research Team Leader, VTT Technical Research Center of Finland

BIOGRAPHY

Taina Kamppuri leads the Textile and Nonwovens Materials team at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, within the Sustainable Products and Materials business area. One of the key activities of her team is the development of plastic-free nonwovens, leveraging their world-class understanding of cellulose-based materials. Tiana’s research spans a wide range of topics, including cellulose based textile fibers, nonwoven process with foam forming, and other technical applications for textile fibers. Recently, her focus has been on creating sustainable nonwovens and promoting the circularity of textiles. At the hear of her team’s mission is helping customers turn scientific discovers into practical innovations.

No Plastic, No Problem: The Next Generation of Eco-Wise Wipes

Unlocking the Future of Plastic-Free Sustainable Nonwovens

In this presentation, we highlight our expertise in developing sustainable materials, including plastic-free wipes such as biodegradable nanocellulose-bonded flushable wipes, antimicrobial wipes free from harsh chemicals, and gradient structures for absorption core materials.

VTT’s foam forming platform supports the development of various products, making it ideal for material development towards plastic-free wipes. This technology enables the use of long fibers, improving product quality and performance while significantly reducing water usage. Foam forming aligns with global efforts to minimize environmental footprints and promote circular economy principles.

Building on the energy-saving success of foam forming, which reduces drying energy by up to 30%, VTT has invested in air-laid technology. This new approach is set to revolutionize fiber-based material production by potentially reducing water usage by up to 90% and energy consumption by up to 50%, while also cutting carbon emissions.

We also explore sustainable futures, growth opportunities, and emerging technologies in plastic-free nonwovens, promoting the transition towards more sustainable practices.

Our advanced piloting facilities support the development and scaling of sustainable nonwovens, from lab-scale experiments to industrial-scale production. We believe in the power of collaboration, working closely with our customers to tailor solutions to their specific needs and challenges.
