Preservative Developments: Safety vs Efficacy

The Impact of Preservative Pressure on Wet Wipes

Preservatives are essential for ensuring the quality and safety of personal care and home care products. Restrictions and pressure from NGOs on traditional preservative chemistries continues in spite of the scientific approach to safety and risk assessment of the remaining active ingredients. Moreover, retailers are now implementing positive and negative chemical lists. This has started to cause concerns for the manufacturers of personal and home care products, as well as the consumer.

Collectively, these trends are limiting preservative options in the personal care and home care industry. Baby wipes in particular are greatly impacted by the “shrinking preservative palette”. In this presentation, an analysis of the impact of these pressures on the microbial robustness and quality of commercial baby wipes will be presented. Advocacy efforts for preservatives will also be discussed.
